November Newsletter 2023

November is all about gratitude and growing! This month we will be discussing what it means to be thankful and the many things in our lives we are thankful for like our country, our family, our community, our homes, our school, having healthy foods to eat, and also giving back to others. We will be starting our continent exploration with our own continent of north America and focusing in on our country of The United States of America. We will be talking about all of the things that make us American that we are fortunate to have, and we will be taking a closer looking into why we celebrate Thanksgiving and harvesting food. With this, we will spend the month learning all about food! We will discuss different food groups and what each does for our body. There will be various activities out this month where the children can sort food by its different food group, create balanced plates of food from each food group, and taste foods from different food groups through food prep activities.

We spent all of last month exploring the entire universe, our galaxy, and our solar system. As we narrow our focus to our own planet, our own continent, and our own country; the children will learn that our earth is made up of land, air, and water. For the geography curriculum this month, we will discuss how all of the land on earth is one of the 7 continents and all of the water on our earth is one of the 5 oceans. Going along with this, for science this month we will conduct a science experiment in which we freeze water into a solid, we melt ice into liquid, and we boil water to create steam. This will represent solid, liquid, and gas, which we will use to demonstrate the land, air, and water our earth is made up of. For culture this month, we will be studying leaves and looking at their different shapes and colors. For art this month, we will use leaves to create nature art.

Throughout November, we will have a few activities tying together our unit on being thankful, on our country, and on healthy foods. We will use our thankful chest as a group lesson, in which the children place gold coins inside the treasure chest and say something they are thankful for. This is a concrete way for the children to appreciate what it means to be thankful and to consciously think about all of the things they are happy to have in their lives. We will then look at all of the gold coins in our thankful chest and talk about how lucky we are to have so many special “treasures” in our lives. We will also discuss those that do not have as much as we do in our world, our country, and even here in our own community and how we can help them. We will be doing a thanksgiving can drive throughout this month, and boxes will be placed on the main porch and the toddler porch where you can drop canned and boxed pantry items to be donated. All donated items are welcome, but we will be giving a specific food group to focus on each week. We encourage you to have your kids help pick out canned and boxed items from the specific food group to donate! We will be having a Thanksgiving feast on Wednesday, November 22nd, and further details will be provided on how to donate food items for our celebration! This month we are thankful for our RMA community. We can’t wait for a healthy and happy month of learning, giving thanks, and giving back!
